Frequently Asked Questions

Giving You a Lifelong Relationship with Your Health

Does it hurt?

Surprisingly, no. Acupuncture needles are hair-thin (about the width of a strand of hair) and solid, unlike the hollow needles used for flu shots. You might feel a tiny pinch, a dull ache, or a heavy sensation, but it shouldn’t be painful. Most people actually fall asleep during the session—a phenomenon known as an “acu-nap.”

How many sessions do I need?

It’s rarely a “one and done” situation.

Acute issues: (e.g., a recent sprain) might take 2–4 sessions.

Chronic issues: (e.g., long-term back pain or hormonal issues) usually require a course of 6–10 treatments. Your practitioner will likely suggest starting with 1–2 sessions per week.

What can acupuncture actually treat?

Dr. Chang is a licensed traditional Chinese medicine doctor and what this means is that acupuncture is one part of the medicine. Traditional Chinese medicine encompasses other things like herbs, dietary and lifestyle recommendations. You can talk to Dr. Chang more if you are interested during your session.

In terms of acupuncture, it can treat the whole body and a variety of issues, such as:

  • A wide range of conditions. Some examples:
  • Physical: Migraines, sciatica, arthritis, sports injuries, any type of pain.
  • Internal: Digestive issues, insomnia, and PMS/fertility, women and couples looking to get pregnant naturally, through IUI or IVF.
  • Mental: Stress, anxiety, and depression.
When can I do acupuncture? I have nothing wrong, can I still do acupuncture?

Acupuncture is best when there is nothing wrong to promote healthy living, just like going to the gym or dialing in nutrition is important for health.

Are the needles clean? Are they single use?

Absolutely. Licensed acupuncturists use sterile, single-use, disposable needles. They come in sealed packs and are disposed of in biohazard sharps containers immediately after use.

Are there side effects?

Side effects are generally mild and temporary:

  • Minor bruising or redness at the needle site.
  • Feeling slightly lightheaded or “floaty” right after.
Do I need to do anything to prepare?

Don’t come hungry: Have a light snack beforehand. Treating someone on an empty stomach can lead to dizziness.

Wear loose clothing: This allows the practitioner to reach your knees, elbows, and torso easily.

Avoid caffeine: You want your nervous system to be as calm as possible.

Do you take insurance?

We take most major insurances, except Medi-cal, Medicare and Kaiser. Please submit an online inquiry on our website, and someone will get back to you regarding your acupuncture benefits.

How long does the treatment take?

New patients should allocate an hour and a half to two hours to find parking and for the treatment. Following treatments should allocate about an hour.

Dr. Chang is very thorough with her assessments and treatments and patients are also treated based on medical necessity so we appreciate your patience as treatments may sometimes not run on time.

However, you can always let Dr. Chang know by what time you need to leave and she will make sure to get you out in time.

Do you have parking?

At our University Heights location, there is plenty of parking on Park and Adams. The parking is metered parking but there are some free parking spots located in the residential neighborhood on the same block. There is one handicap parking spot right outside the door of the clinic.

At our Chula Vista/Eastlake location, there is a parking lot. This location however has a set of stairs and there is no elevator so if mobility is an issue, we recommend booking at our University Heights location.

I'm scared of needles, can I still do acupuncture? Does it hurt?

Dr. Chang has a very gentle yet effective approach to treatment and always takes into consideration patient comfort levels and will never force patients to sustain pain to get results. Let her know during your treatment and she will be sure to work with you.

I'm lost, how do I get to your clinic?

University Heights: We are located right on Park Blvd on the same block as underneath the “University Heights” sign on the same side of the street as the Summer’s liquor on the corner in between Adams and Madison.

Chula Vista/Eastlake: Drive or walk to the side of the building where the music school and Sports Performance front doors are located. When facing the building, you’ll see a music school to the right of a door you need to take to go up the stairs to suite 204. There is another acupuncture clinic in the same building, that is not the one. Pure Health Alliance is upstairs and the office door is located right across from the bathroom in Suite 204.

I'm running late but on my way, can I still come?

Unfortunately our office policy has a 10 minutes grace period.
