Immunity Tonics to Strengthen Your Immune System

Happy May! Hopefully, everyone is doing well and enjoying some of the warmer weather and still staying safe. Yes, we have been open and serving our community through COVID-19 and we are still practicing increased disinfecting and screening protocols, limiting the number of patients and people in the office at one time and closely following the guidelines of the CDC, WHO and local authorities. We kindly ask when you come in for your appointments to wear a mask or face coverings, use provided hand sanitizer or wash your hands upon entering and do not linger in our waiting room so that we can continue to keep everyone safe.

Dr. Chang has gotten a lot of questions about easy things patients can do at home to help with the immunity system and general health. Below are two things, a lemon ginger tea and chicken bone broth. These recipes are courtesy of Dr. Yuan Wang, a long time mentor and friend of Dr. Chang. Enjoy!
 

Lemon and Ginger Tea

Ingredients:

– 1 inch long slice of peeled fresh ginger

– 1 tsp honey (optional)

– 2 slices lemon

Directions: Place ginger and lemon in a mug. Pour in 12oz of hot water and let brew for 5 minutes. If desired, add honey to taste. Drink every morning as an immunity tonic.3
 

Chicken Bone Broth

Ingredients:

– 2lbs bone-in chicken (dark meat is preferred due to the size of the bones)

– 1 white or yellow onion, halved

– 2 carrots cut into large chunks

– 2 inch long piece of peeled fresh ginger

– salt to taste

Directions: Bring 12 cups (or however much fills your favorite pot) of water to a rolling boil. Add all ingredients to the pot and lower heat to simmer. Allow to simmer for 1.5 to 2 hours. Strain the broth. If you like, you can add the chicken meat back in. You can also add other fresh vegetables and cook for an additional 15 minutes. Do not eat the vegetables that you made the stock with; their nutrients and vitamins have been boiled into the broth.
 
Sip the hot broth whenever you’re feeling a chill or to soothe your stomach after dinner. Dr. Chang likes to have a cup for breakfast sometimes to wake up the digestive system and the body.

This recipe can be made in an instant pot in about half the time.
